At Logos Nursery we seek to develop the basic mathematical foundations required in Early Childhood Education, to achieve this we work with the Singapore Method.

Why?

This method approaches mathematical concepts in a systematic, attractive and enjoyable way and focuses each lesson towards a specific learning objective. “Schools that think, a nation that learns”

What are the objectives?

To develop and improve the intellectual and achieve deep learning.

What does it focus on?

The method puts emphasis on problem solving rather than on the mechanics, procedures or formulas involved in math.

It focuses on the development of abstract thinking, critical thinking, understanding of concepts and problem solving. “When the way of thinking changes, knowledge is built and the ability to learn increases”

PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY

1. Consolidated approach using abstract graphics: allows the pupil to broach mathematics in a meaningful way through explicit activities before moving towards graphic and abstract representation. This allows pupils to understand the mathematical concepts before learning the “rules” or predetermined expressions.

  • The pupil’s first contact with mathematical concepts is through the use of manipulatives.
  • Subsequently, he/she moves towards the graphic phase, in which drawings are used to present problems.
  • When the pupil is familiar with ideas presented, he/ she moves on to a more advanced, abstract phase, in which only numbers, notations and symbols are used.

2.Spiral progression: The new mathematical concepts are introduced through a spiral progression strengthening the previous concepts explained and dominated. The structured activities contribute to consolidate the mathematical concepts learned. The spiral progression also allows us to review the most important mathematical concepts, while at the same time expand them.

3. Metacognition: refers to the ability of people to supervise their own thought processes. By teaching students to be aware of the strategies they use to accomplish a task, we will get them to think of alternative ways to solve problems and promote logical thinking.

Maths is an excellent vehicle for the development and improvement of intellectual skills, through logical reasoning, special visualization, analysis and abstract thinking
